Student Award and Scholarship Opportunities

Fisher Parker Travel Award

Application: Not available at this time.

This travel award is offered to HSS majors who wish to pursue internships or coursework for class credit outside of the greater Charleston metro area, including study abroad.

Requirements

  • Students must be a School of Humanities and Social Sciences major
  • Students should demonstrate through their application and cover letter that financial support is critical to making the internship or travel opportunity possible.
  • Internships/coursework may be for fall, or summer semesters.
  • Students will be enrolled in the College of Charleston during their internship or study abroad so that they receive credit hours.

Preferences

  • 3.0 G.P.A. is preferred
  • Students who are employed, thereby necessitating an award to help cover time away from work to intern.

The application and any additional documentation must be submitted by April 15, 2018. Decisions will be made on April 30, 2018.

The Jordan Rively Scholarship

Application: Not available at this time. 

This scholarship is in memory of Joe Rively's grandparents for funding his College of Charleston education. It will be awarded to one student annually in the amount of $2500.

Requirements

  • Student must be pursuing a B.A. within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Student must exhibit financial need

Preference

  • Political science majors

The Maria De La Guardia Scholarship

Application: Not available at this time.

Since earning her B.A. in political science at the College of Charleston, Maria De La Guardia '85 has continued to be an ardant supporter of the College. Maria values the education she received and would like to ensure that out-of-state students, like herself, are granted the opportunity to explore academic excellence and have access to resources for success. This scholarship is awarded to one student for $2500 a year and can be renewable.

  • Student displays financial need

Renewal Criteria

  • Student maintains a 3.0 GPA
  • Student remains a declared major in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences  
  • Student displays leadership and dedication to a program or department within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Internship Award

Application: Not available at this time.

Two awards of $1000 each are available to third-year students (57+ earned hours) majoring within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Qualified applicants will maintain at least a 2.8 overall GPA with a record of success in their academic and professional lives. Preference given to those with financial need. Students must be enrolled in a summer HSS course for the internship. This course must be for academic credit. In addition to this online application, students applying for this scholarship are encouraged to send a letter of recommendation from a faculty member to monkk@cofc.edu.  Recommendations from employers, supervisors, and community partners are also welcome.

The application and any additional documentation must be submitted by April 15, 2018. Decisions will be made on April 30, 2018.

Study Abroad Award

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is pleased to offer a competitive scholarship to students who will enroll in one of the summer College of Charleston Study Abroad programs found here: http://international.cofc.edu/study-abroad/cofcsummer.php

A total of $4000 will be distributed this year to students majoring in HSS. 

The application must be submitted by March 17, 2018. Decisions will be made on April 9, 2018.

Student Travel Award

Application: Can be found here. 

This award is offered to both graduate and undergraduate students majoring in a degree program in HSS. The travel awards are intended to supplement funding acquired through other sources at the College of Charleston. The award is not for study abroad travel or networking events. The awards will be limited to $500. Decisions will be made within 2 weeks of the application deadline.

Fall application deadlines: September 21, 2018 and October 26, 2018

Spring application deadlines: February 22, 2019 and April 12, 2019

W.N. Looper Award

Application: Not available at this time.

The W.N. Looper Award was established to provide financial support for College of Charleston undergraduate students majoring within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences to complete a summer internship with United States Congress on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. A total of $3500 will be awarded to one student. The award may be used to support the student's living expenses during their time in Washington, D.C. The recipient will be selected based on the established criteria and responses to the essay questions describing the impact this opportunity would have in reaching their educational and career goals.

The application deadline is October 15, 2018. The award recipient will be notified by November 1, 2018.

Requirements

  • Freshman, sophomore, or junior student majoring within the humanities or social sciences
  • South Carolina resident
  • Cumulative 2.5 GPA
  • Interest in interning with U.S. Congress on Capitol Hill
